This is the first in a set of three end-of-year 2016 music stats posts. Going with songs first because they are the most ephemeral, followed by top artists, then top albums. I keep track of every track and podcast episode I listen to on Itunes, my Ipods, Spotify, YouTube, etc. by way of scrobbling. If you don’t have all your platforms connected to, then you’re doing it wrong.

I clearly did not experience enough emotional turmoil this year. Instead of songs that I played over and over because they resounded emotionally with me, its mainly, though not entirely, a bunch of songs that I listened to frequently simply because they were on a lot of playlists.

“Somebody Else” is by far my most favourite song of the year. Perfect combination of denial, emotional desire, and sexuality.

The “Make Me…” and “Don’t Let Me Down” videos are so bad.

Seriously though, I can’t stand “Cheap Thrills.” I’m disappointed in myself for listening to it so often. This song may have ruined Sia for me.

1. “I Took a Pill in Ibiza (Seeb Remix)” – Mike Posner

“And I can’t keep a girl, no
‘Cause as soon as the sun comes up
I cut ’em all loose and work’s my excuse
But the truth is I can’t open up”

2. “Somebody Else” – The 1975

So I heard you found somebody else

And at first I thought it was a lie

I took all my things that make sounds
The rest I can do without
I don’t want your body
But I hate to think about you with somebody else
Our love has gone cold
You’re intertwining your soul with somebody else
I’m looking through you while you’re looking through your phone
And then leaving with somebody else
No, I don’t want your body
But I’m picturing your body with somebody else…”

3. “Formation” – Beyonce

“Okay, ladies, now let’s get in formation, ’cause I slay
Prove to me you got some coordination, ’cause I slay
Slay trick, or you get eliminated…

When he fuck me good, I take his ass to Red Lobster, cause I slay…”

4. “Cheap Thrills” – Sia

5. “Make Me…” – Britney Spears

“Listen, here we are, need you
I’ve always wondered what was off limits
Staring at you til I’m caught in this
Back and forth like this was all tennis
I’m all jealous, you came with someone
But we could tell that there’s changes coming
See I could tell that you’re a dangerous woman
That means you’re speaking my language, come on
Now follow me, let’s go”

6. “Needed Me” – Rihanna

“Tryna fix your inner issues with a bad bitch
Didn’t they tell you that I was a savage
Fuck your white horse and a carriage
Bet you never could imagine
Never told you you could have it

You needed me
You needed me
To feel a little more, and give a little less
Know you hate to confess
But baby ooh, you needed me”

7. “Work” – Rihanna

“I believed all of your dreams are duration
You took my heart and my keys and my patience
You took my heart off my sleeve a decoration
You mistaken my love I brought for you for foundation”

8. “I Hate U, I Love U (feat. Olivia O’Brien)” – Gnash

“Fucked around and got attached to you
Friends can break your heart too, and
I’m always tired but never of you
If I pulled a you on you, you wouldn’t like that shit
I put this real out, but you wouldn’t bite that shit
I type a text but then I nevermind that shit
I got these feelings but you never mind that shit
Oh oh, keep it on the low
You’re still in love with me but your friends don’t know
If u wanted me you would just say so
And if I were you, I would never let me go”

9. “Don’t Let Me Down” – The Chainsmokers

“Crashing, hit a wall”

10. “Pillowtalk” – Zayn

“In the place that feels the tears
The place to lose your fears
Yeah, reckless behavior
A place that is so pure, so dirty and raw”

11. “Stitches” – Shawn Mendez

“Got a feeling that I’m going under
But I know that I’ll make it out alive
If I quit calling you my lover
Move on”
