This is the first in a set of three end-of-year 2018 music stats posts. Going with songs first because they are the most ephemeral, followed by top artists, then top albums. I keep track of every track and podcast episode I listen to on Itunes, my Ipods, Spotify, YouTube, etc. by way of Last.fm scrobbling.
*A complete Spotify playlist of my top 50 songs of the year can be found at the end of the post.*
1. “Never Be the Same” – Camila Cabello
“It’s you, babe
And I’m a sucker for the way that you move, babe
And I could try to run, but it would be useless
You’re to blame
Just one hit of you, I knew I’ll never be the same”
2. “Curious” – Hayley Kiyoko
“Yeah
I need a drink, whiskey ain’t my thing
But shit is all good
I can handle things- like I wish that you would
You’ve been out of reach, could you explain?
I think that you should
What you been up to?
Who’s been loving you good?”
3. “Make Me Feel” – Janelle Monae
“It’s like I’m powerful with a little bit of tender
An emotional, sexual bender
Mess me up, yeah, but no one does it better
There’s nothin’ better”
4. “Tilted” – Christine and the Queens
“I’m actually good
Can’t help it if we’re tilted
I’m actually good
Can’t help it if we’re tilted”
5. “What Kind of Man” – Florence + the Machine
“To let me dangle at a cruel angle
Oh, my feet don’t touch the floor
Sometimes you’re half in and then you’re half out
But you never close the door”
6. “Hunger” – Florence + the Machine
“Tell me what you need, oh, you look so free
The way you use your body, baby, come on and work it for me
Don’t let it get you down, you’re the best thing I’ve seen
We never found the answer but we knew one thing”
7. “Dog Days Are Over” – Florence + the Machine
“And I never wanted anything from you
Except everything you had
And what was left after that too, oh.”
8. “I Am Not a Robot” – Marina & the Diamonds
“It’s okay to say you’ve got a weak spot
You don’t always have to be on top”
9. “I Like That” – Janelle Monae
“A little crazy, little sexy, little cool
Little rough around the edges, but I keep it smooth
I’m always left of center and that’s right where I belong
I’m the random minor note you hear in major songs”
10. “This Is What Makes Us Girls” – Lana Del Rey
“Know we used to go break in
To the hotel pool, glittering we’d swim
Runnin’ from the cops in our black bikini tops
Screaming, get us while we’re hot
We don’t give a what”
11. “Young and Beautiful” – Lana Del Rey
“Will you still love me
When I’m no longer young and beautiful?
Will you still love me
When I’ve got nothing but my aching soul?”
