This is the first in a set of three end-of-year 2017 music stats posts. Going with songs first because they are the most ephemeral, followed by top artists, then top albums. I keep track of every track and podcast episode I listen to on Itunes, my Ipods, Spotify, YouTube, etc. by way of Last.fm scrobbling.
*A complete Spotify playlist of my top 50 songs of the year can be found at the end of the post.
1. “Truth Hurts” by Lizzo
“You coulda had a bad bitch, non-committal
Help you with your career just a little
You’re ‘posed to hold me down, but you’re holding me back
And that’s the sound of me not calling you back”
2. “Bodak Yellow” by Cardi B
“And I just checked my accounts
Turns out, I’m rich, I’m rich, I’m rich
I put my hand above my hip
I bet, you dip, he dip, she dip”
3. “…Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears
“Oh, baby, baby
How was I supposed to know
That something wasn’t right here?”
4. “Liability” by Lorde
“They say, “You’re a little much for me
You’re a liability
You’re a little much for me”
So they pull back, make other plans
I understand, I’m a liability
Get you wild, make you leave
I’m a little much for
E-a-na-na-na, everyone”
5. “Don’t Take the Money” by Bleachers
“Somebody broke me once
Love was a currency
A shimmering balance act
I think that I laughed at that
And I saw your face and hands
Coloured in sun and then
I think I understand
Will I understand?”
6. “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” by Britney Spears
“There is no need to protect me
It’s time that I
Learn to face up to this on my own
I’ve seen so much more than you know now
So don’t tell me to shut my eyes”
7. “I’m a Slave 4 U” by Britney Spears
“All you people look at me like I’m a little girl
Well did you ever think it’d be ok for me to step into this world”
8. “Take Me to Church” by Sinead O’Connor
“I’m gonna sing songs of loving and forgiving
Songs of eating and of drinking
Songs of living, songs of calling in the night
Cause’ songs are like a bolt of light
And love’s the only love you should invite
Songs of long and spiteful fails
Songs that don’t let you sit still
Songs that mend your broken bones
And that don’t leave you alone
So get me down from this here tree
Take the rope from off of me
Sit me on the floor
I’m the only one I should adore”
9. “Praying” by Kesha
“I’m proud of who I am
No more monsters, I can breathe again
And you said that I was done
Well, you were wrong and now the best is yet to come
‘Cause I can make it on my own, oh
And I don’t need you, I found a strength I’ve never known
I’ll bring thunder, I’ll bring rain, oh
When I’m finished, they won’t even know your name”
10. “Water Me” by Lizzo
“Like brr brr, operator
Caboose like, choo choo, bless my trainer
Thank God, thank God, thank God, I’m gettin’ thicker
And I got ’em sweatin’ in the middle of the winter”
